Christian Science Healing
“Heal the sick, cleanse the lepers, raise the dead, cast out devils: freely ye have received, freely give” (Matthew 10: 8).
These are the words Jesus spoke to his disciples, empowering them to rebuke evil thoughts and behavior; to drive them out of themselves and others, and to heal “all manner of sickness.”
Christian Scientists understand that Jesus’ directive wasn’t simply for his immediate disciples, or for a limited period of time, but for all who follow his life practice in every age. The Truth and Love that Jesus lived and healed with is universal and just as applicable today.
“The at-one-ment with Christ has appeared - not through vicarious suffering, whereby the just obtain a pardon for the unjust, - but through the eternal law of justice; wherein sinners suffer for their own sins, repent, forsake sin, love God, and keep His commandments, thence to receive the reward of righteousness: salvation from sin, not through the death of a man, but through a divine Life, which is our Redeemer” (Miscellaneous Writings p.123:20).
Most of the healings I’ve experienced through Christian Science prayer have required me to take a look at my behavior, my thoughts and actions. Invariably, I come to understand the deep value of humility, and of humbly recognizing the absolute authority of divine Principle. Finding comfort and security in this governing Principle is something we grow to expect as we live in obedience with Principle’s demands.
Mary Baker Eddy, the Discoverer of Christian Science, writes, “Human will must be subjugated. We cannot obey both God, good, and evil, - in other words, the material senses, false suggestions, self-will, selfish motives, and human policy... Honesty in every condition, under every circumstance, is the indispensable rule of obedience” (Miscellaneous Writings p.118:1-4, 6-8).
It’s this deeper commitment to Christ, the divine idea of God, that delivers us into His presence, freeing us from the harmful beliefs of sin, disease, and death. What is that worth? Sacrificing the human ego to the one divine Mind may, at times, effect a struggle, but it is a small cost for eternal Life.
Practicing the Science of Christ inevitably ushers the sincere student into the understanding that as one’s thought purifies this increases one’s ability and desire to heal spiritually.
“The time for the reappearing of the divine healing is throughout all time; and whosoever layeth his earthly all on the altar of divine Science, drinketh of Christ’s cup now, and is endued with the spirit and power of Christian healing” (Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures p.55:22).
